On May 12th, 2026 at approximately 2:54 p.m., Black Hawk County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to the intersection of Highway 63 and Cedar Wapsi Road north of Waterloo, Iowa regarding a two vehicle accident with injuries.

The two vehicles involved were a Chevy Van being driven by an adult female and a Nissan Altima occupied by an adult female driver, teenage passenger, and a toddler. The Chevy was driving west on Cedar Wapsi Road and after stopping at the stop sign, proceeded into the intersection. The Nissan was driving south on Highway 63 approaching this intersection when the Chevy proceeded through the intersection, not yielding to traffic.

The Nissan Altima impacted the Chevy Van on the passenger side, causing both vehicles to come to a stop in the southwest corner of the intersection. The driver of the Nissan Altima had to be mechanically extricated from the vehicle. All drivers and passengers were transported to Allen Hospital by ambulance. The driver of the Nissan and the toddler passenger were eventually transported to Iowa City by helicopter due to the extent of their injuries.

The driver of the Chevy Van and the teenage passenger of the Nissan Altima both remained at Allen Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Iowa State Patrol, Denver Fire Department and Ambulance, Waterloo Fire Department, MercyOne Ambulance Service, and Sheetz Towing.
