K-9 Unit

The Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office utilizes a K-9 Unit in the fight against illegal narcotics. The sheriff’s K-9 unit was formed in 1989 and currently consists of two handlers and K-9s.

The dogs we use are highly trained and are continuously going through maintenance training, along with their handlers. It takes a certain type of deputy to work with a service dog. The deputy assigned as a K-9 handler sacrifices a good portion of their own time; working, training, and living with his assigned partner. As a result, a very strong bond between the dog and the handler takes place. The deputy is able to read and understand his dog's actions and the dog, likewise; is able to understand his handler.

The K-9 unit is run solely on donations from businesses and individuals within our community and it is with this assistance that our department is able to combat the drug problem that affects our community. If you are interested in donating to this cause, contact us for information on how you can help. Your assistance is appreciated by the sheriff's office and our community.
