Black Hawk County Jail Booking Clerk

Under general supervision, processes and files paperwork which accompanies the incarceration or release of arrestees in the County jail facility; processes bail bonds and fines; and performs related work as required.
 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
 

Booking Procedures:

Gathers arrest and booking documentation, fingerprints, and mug shots.  Processes incoming inmates and arrestee.   Enters information into Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS).  Obtain medical history data during intakes, as required by law.  Alert Intakes Officers of medical emergencies, injuries, claims by new arrestee, suicidal tendencies, or other pertinent information.  Receives inmate and arrestee property receipts, and stores property in secure storage.  Properly books arrestee into the jail center as indicted by arrest citation and complaint, court order, warrant of arrest or other suitable documentation.  Maintains custody and control of inmate's cash accounts.  Completes Inmates Status Screen, Phone Records, Bond Information and other booking information, obtains signatures, as required.  Prepares inmate files, inserts booking records, and other documentation.
 
 

Initial Appearance:

Gathers and assembles arrest documentation for presentation to the courts.  Assists Intake Officers in preparing arrestee for initial appearance.  Process inmates assigned to housing units following initial appearance, complete booking process.
 
 

Release of Inmates:

Release inmates and arrestees from jail upon receipt of authorizing documentation.  Return inmates property upon release or transfer to other agency or institution, obtains signatures, as required.  Gathers release documentation; prepares for transfer of inmates files to Records Division.
 

Non-Scheduled Duties:

Provides and maintains order in intakes area.  May be required to assists sworn staff in conducting searches of "same sex" arrestee.  Directs arrestee to holding cells or group waiting area.  Advises arrestee of expectations, behaviors, and standards during processing.  Observes and oversees arrestee and inmates in intake area.
  
 

Qualification Requirements:

Education and/or Experience:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and two years clerical experience which includes direct public contact and experience in data entry training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
 

Language Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively one-on-one or to employees of organizations.
 

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.  Ability to perform these operations using units of American money, weight measurement and volume.
  
 

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to make rational decisions and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Ability to acquire and maintain certification on the NCIC/CJIS criminal history information system is a condition of continued employment.  Failure to obtain certification within six (6) months of hire date and  successfully re- certify every two (2) years will result in termination.
 

Other Skills and Abilities:

Ability to interact with persons from varied socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds.  Ability to operate typewriter, computer and 10-key calculator.  Ability to work all hours, including weekends and holidays, to maintain continuous 24-hour operations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to sit and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
